This past week, Kathy, the boys and I took a little family vacation down to Mexico. Well to be honest, it’s turned into a work-vacation. Like a lot of my friends, I was SO pumped up after leaving the Summit, I could do nothing but think and create … so we did that there, with our feet in the sand and the sunscreen on.

On of the boys list “To Do with Daddy in Mexico” was learning how to paddle board!
They’ve been psyched about this all Summer. Typically on the weekend, we head out on our boat and go to a great cove in Emerald Bay, where they are enchanted by people standing up, paddling across the ocean! So we decided, we gotta’ take some lessons and ride!
The four of us pull up to the class on the beach (nice view right!!) and one of the first things we learned was:
“On a paddle board if you look down, you fall down.”
Then, the instructor said:
“If you focus on where you are going, the horizon, the waves, the big bounces don’t take you out and you keep standing.”
How about that … if you look down, you go down and if you don’t look out into the distance, you don’t even make it on the water.
As Kathy and I revisited the trip on the plane ride home, we talked about the wisdom we learned and how MUCH it applies to our business right now!
In business, if you’re always staring at today and the challenge in the moment, you fall down. You just don’t go far, because you get trapped in all of the small, to-dos, time wasters and pitfalls.
When were focused on the horizon/our vision, we just keep paddling through. Whether or not the waters get rough, when you know exactly where you’re going, life’s ride becomes easier to manage. It’s the vision/plan that takes us to all the coves we want to see on the horizon.
At the Success Summit, for those of us who were there, we went through a ‘vision board’ exercise. I have gotten so many emails over the past few days about how good and empowering it feels to have some direction in business. It seems like a simple thing to do, but once you get that clarity on where you’re going, you start to flow.
Let’s all remember to stay focused on where you’re going, not the rough waters you’re in at any particular moment!
Strategy Matters and Passion Rules … and go out there and CRUSH IT while you’re at it!

P.S. Oh and in case you’re wondering … Michael and Steven CRUSHED IT out there on the water. What proud parents we are!!! They have their eyes on their visions, in more ways than one!

Awesome and thanks for sharing and leading us to succuss.
I loved the Truth in that statement.” if you look down, you fall down” Mary Baker Eddy wrote “We walk in the direction that we look” This has played out when I was learning to drive. I tried to keep the middle of the front of the car aligned with the side of the road to go straight and adjust to my side of the car. I was 14, ok. I found out that by looking far forward to the horizon the car went straight after all. I walked 1.45 min up a big hill with a friend and her dogs it was fun because I looked at the dogs. Later I walked without the dogs and noticed I kept looking at my feet. It took a lot to remind me to really keep my eyes up.
Thats the training you are always getting us up there to see. Look up here, you say. We love you and we look up. You hear the same thing 22 coaches x all of us. This really is the short cut. Where we look is where we BE.
It warms my heart to know that you walking this philosophical path with your family, thanks for sharing your experience with us.
