If you’re anything like me or my coaching clients, the headlines we are reading every day are getting old.

We’re done with the same media pundits telling us the same negative news, day in and day out.

Now here’s one article that came across my desk today that debunked the whole “negative media” concept … ready for this???

Bhutan- A Nation Committed to Their Gross National Happiness!

Ok, now that’s an article I want to learn more about!!!!!!

Notice they said, Gross National Happiness … not Gross National Product. Interesting, right?

I found this intriguing … so I had to check out this whole “Gross National Happiness” idea was and what it all meant.

I was interested to read about a nation that places value in their systems that promote happiness and well-being.

Here’s what they measure (from Wikipedia):

Economic Wellness: Indicated via economic metrics such as consumer debt, average income to consumer price index ratio and income distribution
Environmental Wellness: Indicated via environmental metrics such as pollution, noise and traffic
Physical Wellness: Indicated via measurement of physical health metrics such as severe illnesses
Mental Wellness: Indicated via measurement of mental health metrics such as usage of antidepressants and rise or decline of psychotherapy patients
Workplace Wellness: Indicated via measurement of as jobless claims, job change, workplace complaints and lawsuits
Social Wellness: Indicated via measurement of discrimination, safety, divorce rates, complaints of domestic conflicts and family lawsuits, public lawsuits, crime rates
Political Wellness: Indicated via measurement of the quality of local democracy, individual freedom, and foreign conflicts.
Great concept right?

Have you ever taken a moment to evaluate your “Personal Happiness and Wellness”?

Have you taken a moment to do a self-examine on how you are feeling amidst all of this turbulence and change? It’s not a comfortable time for a lot of people … this we know.

So if you find yourself “low” like a lot of people are, in terms of happiness … here’s a list of some ideas to try this weekend. Ready …

Don’t turn on the news this weekend … hold a media moratorium for a couple days, see if you feel any better
Call a friend you always love laughing with and really laugh
If you have a child or a spouse or someone you care about, do something small to surprise them
Really enjoy that cup or coffee or tea tomorrow morning
Create a dream board or screen saver with pictures of the goals you are working towards
Send a thank you letter to someone in the military
Drop off some canned goods at a local food bank
Open up a bottle of wine “you’ve been saving for a special moment” just because
Check out your local farmers market this weekend and buy something you have never tried before
Listen to a motivational cd or watch something great on YouTube
Order a double-scoop of your favorite flavor
Go see a double-feauture … with popcorn
Read a blog from your favorite blogger
So in honor of Bhutan and the great concept they have going on, what things will you do this weekend and next week that will bring some more fun and joy into your life?

Tell me … I can’t wait to read some GOOD NEWS!

This week, my family and I are enjoying a few days away in the mountains, where we are all are having fun snowboarding and skiing. When I read this headline this morning, I was particularly touched.

Paul Schipper, an avid skier who hit the slopes every day of the season for more than 24 years, has past away. He was 85.

20050320HOschipper_230 Skiing For 24 Years Straight ... What Does THAT Have to Do With Real Estate?

WOW … 24 years of skiing the slopes every single day during each season! That meant Paul was on the slopes for 3,903 consecutive days the mountain was open. (I’ve been on the slopes for three days in a row and I can tell ya, it’s not that easy!!!!)

In order to keep his streak alive, Schipper skied in blizzards and through illness and once put off having a cancerous kidney removed so he could keep the streak going. Another time he arranged to ski down the mountain just after midnight in front of the lights of a ski groomer so he could drive to his son’s graduation. That’s what I call being dedicated to your passion and living full-out and By Design!

He was quoted once saying, “Some days I don’t feel like going. But I can always get up there and stagger down one trail.” Paul’s son said about his father, “He sets a goal and he’s driven to meet it.”

Simple concept right. Pursuing your dreams, even on the days you don’t feel like it. This sounds like a concept many of our coaching clients are hearing from me quite often these days.

Like Paul, many of us have passions that we dedicate our lives to. Whether it be professional, personal or spiritual, we pursue our goals with dedication and excitement. But do you do so even on the days you don’t feel like it??? See, that’s where the race is won. Are you ‘staggering down one trail’ even when you don’t want to?

The reality of our world right now is difficult to say the least. These harsh times are affecting a lot us, in all areas of our lives … we can’t hide from this fact. But now … today …this month … this year … I believe the more energy and enthusiasm we put towards accomplishing the goals we have set, the more fulfilled we will become.

Since we truly can’t “control” what the stock market will do today or how the politicians will vote or if its going to rain or shine, we need to start focusing and putting some major effort behind the goals we have in our personal and professional lives. Through hard work and dedication (even on the days that we don’t feel like skiing down the mountain), will lead us to achieving the things we really want.

In honor of Paul and his illustrious streak, take a moment today to think about your passions. What’s making you excited right now? What are you committed to doing every day to have more fun, become more successful or more fulfilled?

Seriously, take a few moments with these questions. Listen to yourself answer them.

Looking forward to you all skiing down “whatever mountain” you decide!

Paul, thanks for the inspiration!

Like most Americans …. my family loves watching American Idol.  Whoever thought Simon would give something to blog about late last night!

Last night at about  half-way through  the show, Simon Cowell, the notorious critical judge asked one of the favorite male singers (with a great voice) …

“You can sing. I get that.  But more the more important question is, are you relevant?  Will America connect with you and vote for you? If you’re not, why are you here?”

Good questions Simon.

We in real estate need to be asking ourselves that very set of questions, in terms of the marketing, branding and advertising we are doing. Does the consumer think your message is relevant right now? Is a prospective home buyer or seller connecting with you, understanding your message?

Do you really think they care  right now if you are “number 1 in your company or if you drive a fancy car or like to collect fine art”? News Flash … No, they don’t. Consumers are looking for agents who are compassionate, understand the market and who can get their home sold.  They want you to be a partner in confidence right now because they have so little faith in what’s happening around the corner.

In case you haven’t noticed, the culture have shifted very quickly in the past 5 months. Have you? Has your message?

Remember what Simon asked, “Are you relevant?”

So…. Are you?

Think about it. Let me know what you think!

Lesson Learned From A Hall of Famer

by tomferry on February 11, 2009

in Real Estate Training

I just finished reading an article about the great Troy Aikman, Dallas Cowboys, Hall of Fame Quarterback … that I think we can all learn from!

Although he has had an illustrious career on the field and now he’s a popular broadcaster, he promised his mother one thing almost 2 decades ago …

That he would graduate from college.

Well, it took him almost 20 years and three Superbowl Victories, but Aikman has gone back at UCLA and finished up his two final courses to complete his degree in Sociology. He will walk with the graduating class of 2009 in June. He told the media he’s “finally taking care of unfinished business.”

So my question to you is … What unfinished business do you have to do that you need to take on right now?

For some of us, its simply getting our website in order, returning phone calls at the end of the day, calling that sometimes-difficult client, replying to your web leads … or maybe its bigger than that …

I know we all have business that we leave undone. This “undone” work tends to weight us down, limiting us from moving forward. Sometimes we get so ‘trapped” in the work that we don’t want to touch, we become unable to react and move forward, leaving us paralyzed in guilt and frustration. This is no way to lead a powerful real estate business, or lead your life for that matter.

Why don’t we all commit today to tackling one project that we have been dreading or putting off???

Once we get it done, trust me, that nagging weight will lift from your shoulders and it will make it easier to move on to other projects and tasks you have to complete! Go for it and see what happens!

Congrats to Troy. I bet he’s making his mother proud!
